We asked Jim if he would introduce himself and share a bit about his photography and approach, and here is what he wrote…

A bit about me: I am a graphic designer and photographer based in Lincoln, Massachusetts and am a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon and Northwestern Universities. My early education in Ohio included a rich exposure to art, classical music and architecture. The impressionist painters especially caught my interest. When my family moved to Arizona in 1964, I discovered the wide variety and beauty of the American West, especially the deserts and canyons, through many hiking trips. I learned and studied landscape photography during that time. In 1982, I was fortunate to attend the penultimate Ansel Adams Photographic Workshops in Carmel, California, studying with Don Worth, Olivia Parker, Roy Decarava, and John Sexton. I have also done workshops with Joel Meyerowitz, Jerry Uelsmann, and curator/historian John Szarkowski. My focus in photographing landscapes is to find dramatic light and space, combining nature with architectural subjects. I like composing images that exude a painterly feel. My favorite places to explore and photograph are the American Southwest, Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, Hawaii, Italy, and France. I have exhibited in the Boston area and Cape Cod and won several awards.

Nature brings me to a welcomed silence, renewal, mystery, and awareness of a great life-giving spirit. I find calmness, spirituality, and meaning there, and I attempt to bring those feelings into my images. I make a photograph when I viscerally feel a composition that translates to a dramatic, interesting and meaningful 2-dimensional image; it may not record exactly what was there, but portrays what I felt and saw in my mind, perhaps in an abstract or dreamy photographic rendering. I hope my work brings a sense of serenity, peace, and appreciation of the natural landscape, a beloved gift that is disappearing.

Welcome to the Mary Jo Rines Virtual Gallery. Welcome to the Rines Gallery’s exhibit of the extraordinary work of Lincoln-based photographer Jim Wojno – landscapes that take us far and wide, each imbued with both a feeling of place and a sense of Jim’s experience of it.

In these photographs, Jim reveals the mystery of capturing the essence of nature with an eye and a mind to what it is trying to tell us. Clearly he has achieved a mastery of visual story telling through a photographic lens.

It is no surprise that Jim has honed his craft through studies with renowned photographers the likes of Ansel Adams, Don Worth, Olivia Parker, and many others. He has done workshops with Joel Meyerowitz, and is a member of landscape photographer Ron Rosenstock’s Study Group.

Jim is also a member of the Concord Center for the Visual Arts and has had work included in two recent annual Frances N. Roddy Exhibitions, as well as several Members’ exhibitions. He has had solo exhibitions at Bridgewater State College, South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, Parish Center for the Arts Gallery, Westford, the Lincoln Public Library, and the Jewish Community Center in Worcester. Jim has had pieces shown in several galleries in Provincetown, the Provincetown Art Association Museum, and the Boston Center for the Arts. Jim has won awards at the South Shore Art Center and a photography competition sponsored by the Organization for the Assabet River.

In our Virtual Rines Gallery Jim features 3 collections of his work: Serene Landscapes (also on live display in the Mary Jo Rines Gallery at First Parish in Weston), Monochrome Images, and photos Inspired by Architecture. Online, Jim also shares more about his approach and technique, and he provides links below to technical information about his photography and prints.

We hope you’ll click through and enjoy this collection of Jim Wojno’s wonderful work!

Best wishes,

Serene Landscapes…

My focus in photographing landscapes is to find dramatic light and space, combining nature with architectural subjects. I like composing images that exude a painterly feel. My favorite places to explore and photograph are the American Southwest, Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Italy and France. I particularly like to find an interesting composition in places I’ve never been or am not frequently present, because of the newness, the surprise of imagination from things unfamiliar.

Nature brings me to a welcomed silence, renewal, mystery, and awareness of a great life-giving spirit. I find calmness, spirituality, and meaning in places far from anywhere man-made, and I attempt to bring those feelings into my images. I make a photograph when I viscerally see and feel a composition that translates to a dramatic, interesting and meaningful 2-dimensional image; it’s not always exactly what was actually there, but portrays what I felt and saw in my mind, perhaps in an abstract or dreamy photographic rendering. The digital darkroom techniques I use make it possible to further realize what I’m visualizing in addition to the process and choices I make while shooting.

I hope that my work brings a sense of serenity, peace, and appreciation of the natural landscape, a beloved gift that is sadly disappearing. You are invited to see these and many other images at my studio.

Monochrome Images…

I chose not to exhibit black and white photographs with my color images, as that can be visually jarring and distract from enjoying the group of images as a holistic group. However, I have been converting a few color images to black and white and find a more convincing result in some, but not all, images. Although most of us see in color, sometimes I find a more interesting photograph by conversion to black and white, with its beautiful range of grey tones. Sometimes color distracts from an image's impact. Monochrome heightens basic elemental forms, spatial relationships, and textures, often allowing a simpler, cleaner but more powerful composition. It allows changing the mood and feel of an image, perhaps conveying or creating a very different emotion. I find black and white particularly effective in communicating a spiritual reverence for nature and it's power.

Architecture-Inspired…

I have always been interested in architecture, and had planned to study it during high school, but was encouraged to study engineering which my parents thought would lead to a more stable career. They may have been right, but I do have an eye for the graphic shapes and lines of buildings, ancient and modern. I often like to frame a distant landscape using architectural elements to draw the viewer into the picture. Other images here present a more graphic and abstract composition.
